Vergrijsd en verweerd houtwerk

If you leave your woodwork untreated outside, such as a fence or a garden shed, the sun and rain will start to damage the wood. The effect and speed of deterioration depend heavily on the type of wood. Fortunately, there is still much that can be done.

Step 1: Inspection and Preparation

Check if the wood is worth the effort. If the wood is mostly rotten, it might be better to replace it entirely. If there are only a few rotten spots, they can be fixed with a wood filler. Clean the wood thoroughly with a quality cleaner (our Eco Cleaner) so that it becomes clear what you are working with.

Step 2: Plan the End Result in Advance

To achieve a satisfactory end result, you need to think ahead about what you want. There are roughly three options.

Natural Appearance

If you are completely attached to the beautiful natural look of the wood, it is worth keeping it clean. This will extend the lifespan of the wood. You can use our Eco Cleaner for this.

Wood Stain

Wood stain is not completely opaque, allowing the wood grain to remain visible. If the wood is not too weathered, you can use lighter colours of wood stain. Otherwise, for the best result, you can use a darker stain.

Wood Varnish

Using an opaque wood varnish, you have a choice of all colours and the wood is completely painted over. First, sand everything smoothly, fill the wood rot holes, and apply a primer. Then paint over it with the wood varnish.

Step 3: Get Started

If you decide to use wood stain or wood varnish, make sure your project is completely dry and keep an eye on the weather forecast (wind and rain). This way, the paint gets as much time as possible to cure. Cleaning can always be done, although it is, of course, most enjoyable with a bit of sunshine.
